Logotherapy and Existential Analysis

Logotherapy was developed by Dr. Viktor Frankl (the author of Mans Search for Meaning) and is sometimes called the "Third Viennese School", after Freud and Adler. While Logotherapy is not directly a psychotherapy, it is a useful adjunct to psychotherapy in various forms, or on its own as a speicific therapy for problems of existence, the lack of meaning we feel in our lives.

Existential Analysis is the process of looking at our lives with an eye to discovering what our values are and how we try to actualise our values in the world. We proceed from the assumption that there is meaning available to us in any condition of life, but psychological or even physical problems can arise when we are prevented from living those values. Moreover, psychological or physical problems can give rise to crises of meaning.

Logotherapy involves techniques to increase opportunities for us to live meaningfully. Again, we believe that there are always such opportunities, and the more we take them, the richer and healthier our lives become.
